Caller reported that this well is not on or near any oil fields or additional gas wells. It is unknown if this release is impacting the community. The gas well is owned by DD Natural Resources LLC, whom have not been contacted regarding this incident at the time of report. Upon closer inspection of the rose bush, the leaves and flowers appeared burnt and the stalks were dying from the top down. This was about 4-6 weeks ago. On 07/05/25, after clipping the burnt remnants of the bush down to remove it altogether, and digging up the root ball, I was overwhelmed by the distinct odor of gasoline as soon as I lifted the root ball out of the ground. I immediately took a substantial sample of the soil, placed it in an uncovered bucket, and the gasoline smell is still overwhelming. Our neighbor works on an automobile in his garage and we are highly concerned that he is disposing of a toxic substance (gasoline) directly onto our once healthy soil. One rose bush is already dead and we are concerned that all the soil is now compromised. This area is up grade from a berry plant from which we eat. The gasoline smell remains strong in the affected area to this day. The soil also appears to be wet. We believe this is a public safety hazard. Additionally, on the 4th of July he was lighting fireworks directly in the area of said gasoline exposure. The flower bed is now highly combustable and we feel this hazard must be addressed ASAP for the safety of the neighborhood as well as the integrity of our home/structure and other plants in the area. I feel compelled to note that he lights off fireworks year-round in the area adjacent to where we believe he poured the gas over the top of our rose bush. | |

I was uncomfortable with the situation and complained to his boss who removed him from dealing with the well. I was advised at that time that the county no longer considered me responsible for destroying the well but would see that the property owner (Janet M Barreneche) would be the responsible party. I was told that I would be kept in the loop as to the status of the well as I have a dedicated easement to the well. Despite MULTIPLE calls and emails spread out over 9 months, I failed to receive any response to status requests. I tried to contact MULTIPLE people at the county and all refused to respond. After complaining to my councilman I finally received a call from Amy Rutledge. She stated that the well had "fallen thru the cracks" and they failed to follow up with the property owner. The feeling I got was that, because this individual has many friends in the dept (friends and family work for the county) that it was swept under the rug so that the property owner could escape paying to abandon the well. I was told that they would send a letter to the property owner. When I asked if I could be kept in the loop (again because I used to be on the well and have a dedicated easement to the well specifically on my property title) I was told NO that I would have to file a freedom of information request. My major concern is that they have livestock penned right on top of the well because there is a tree located at the well site that provides shade. This despite there being a law stating there needs to be a 100' clearance from livestock, pets, etc. They also park their vehicles that leak oil next to the well. Unfortunately, the 3rd party on that well sold their home this month and I have no idea if they disclosed all this to the new owners (who have yet to move in). I am concerned that they are contaminating our water supply. Since the property owner has locked the gate and refused to allow me access (despite a letter from my attorney stating she could not block me from my easement) I have no way to take pictures of the site. The 3rd party, who just sold his home, is the property between me and the property where the well is located. At one point Janet Barrenche told me the well had been destroyed before admitting she had lied in her email and the well had not been destroyed. In any case, my main concern here is the potential contamination of our water table. When I confronted Janet over the animals in cages on top of the well, she stated "We live in the county--F%ck the city people--they should stay out of our property. I am not going to move my animals and I don't care if the piss and shit into the well". I think because she has friends in the county she is able to stay below the radar. The compliant stated that about 30 out of 300 workers were exposed to this drift causing them to feel symptoms of pesticides poisoning. The workers were working in a solar plant during the time of the incident. According to the inspector at the Ag commissioner office Eddy Greynalds, there was no arial application as some reports indicate, rather there was a ground application (AeroBlast) that took place in a pistachio orchard about 2miles away that lasted from 10pm to 5am. There is a possibility that this areoblast application at the Paramount farms orchards could of drifted over time to the solar plant. There is current efforts from the department to do some sampling to figure out where the pesticides came from, there will be three types of sampling; Swipe, foliage and clothing. The chemical that was used is Danitol which is a pest control used for worms. KEEN will follow up with Eddy to update next month. | |

The house was very old and contained both material containing asbestos and lead paint. The house was located at the corner of Mannel and Merced and less than one mile north of the town of Shafter. The smoke from the fire, which no doubt contained toxic lead gas emissions and asbestos fibers was blown directly south and 5 to 10 miles per hour. At the same time as this fire, students at both an elementary school less than a mile south and a high school less than 1.5 miles south were releasing students to go home. This was an irresponsible act by the owner of the home, Occidental Petroleum or Vintage Petroleum, and the fire department. Hopefully the cleanup of the site will not release any more asbestos into the air. The fire was still burning and smoking the next day at 5 pm. Apparently the fire department forgot to put out the fire. They were practicing on a couple small fires in the house earlier in the day before they cleared everything away and burned the house to the ground. The final burn was not necessary and irresponsible because of the nearby town and the potential for toxic emissions, including asbestos, to blow into the town when children were outside. | |

The chemical exposure has caused the staff recently to have headaches, rashes, dizziness, and stomach issues. There is also a history of previous employees who have worked within this building, being exposed to the chemicals like we are, who have developed cancer. My organization has contacted the landlord, and he has not been able to get someone to install professional venting. He states he will be doing so this weekend. He was to take care of this a month ago. Meanwhile, a pregnant staff member is out of work because she is sick when the hair dresser does acrylic nails or perms. A crop duster dropped its load about 7:50 a.m. in the 25800 block of Stockdale Highway, and pesticides were believed to have drifted over the bus, said Ernie Unruh, superintendent of the Rio Bravo-Greeley School Union School District. The bus was not directly hit. About 20 students complained of itchiness, upset stomach and generally not feeling well. Firefighters and hazardous materials crews decontaminated students on school grounds on Enos Lane at Kratzmeyer Road. The children were given showers and clean clothes to wear. While Hall Ambulance spokesman Scott Allen initially said some patients were going to a hospital, later it appeared the children were evaluated and taken care of at the school. One parent took a child to a doctor to ensure the child's asthma would not be exacerbated by the exposure. Unruh said the bus driver immediately called him and said he believed pesticide has drifted over the bus. Parents of the students on the bus were called, as well as emergency help. | |

The ground at the site is contaminated with pesticides from many years ago. The site was fenced and closed over 30 years ago but judging by the grafiti that keeps appearing within the site, people have access if they want it. The area with the worst contamination was covered with asphalt many years ago. A final cleanup plan was made by DTSC, the railroad which owns the site, and the City of Shafter a few years ago. In 2010 cleanup began by removal of old tanks and some 4 ft pits were dug through the asphalt to determine the depth of pesticide contamination. Several inches of rain fell in late 2010 and filled these pits with water. In 2011 the pits were expanded and dug deeper. The pesticides?? were clearly visible in the soil as a yellow substance at depths greater than 10 feet. This March, 2012, rain has again fallen (1.5 in)and partially filled these open pits. It appears the rain may be causing the pesticide contamination to go deeper into the soil towards drinking water sources. DTSC, the BNSF railroad, and the City of Shafter all appear to be responsible for the proper cleanup of this site and it does not seem to be going very well. | |
