Location: Weedpatch Highway & Fuller Drive, Bakersfield
Categorie: Pesticides
Description:
On Monday, June 4, pesticide spray from Giumarra Vineyards near Weedpatch Highway & Fuller Drive (near Lamont) caused neighbors across the street to develop headaches, nausea and vomiting. Initial reports to Kern County Fire Department were that 13 people were affected, but once fire officials checked the area, only four people were still experiencing symptoms. Neighbors say applicators were violating regulations by not turning sprayers off when they turned corners. A Giumarra representative told reporters the applicators were spraying nutrients at the time and so couldn't have caused any harm, but the Department of Agriculture told Bakersfield.now that four pesticides were actually being sprayed on the property at the time people got sick. The Department of Agriculture is currently investigating the incident.
